Republican Front Runners Part 1 of 3

The Iowa caucus has completed and the prominent front runners have been picked.  Raphael (Ted) Cruz came in first with 27.6% of the vote, Donald Trump came in second with 24.3% of the vote and Marco Rubio came in third with 23.1% of the vote.  The remaining Republican candidates received less then 10% of the vote.  This series of posts will cover the top 3 candidates, starting with Ted Cruz.

My Approved Portraits

Women’s Health

Ted Cruz is anti-abortion.  As a Texas senator he has worked tirelessly to make it harder for women to receive abortions. As solicitor general of the state, he defended a federal law that bans partial birth abortion.  Ted Cruz helped lead the Senate to try to defund Planned Parenthood.  One of the first things Ted Cruz plans to do if he becomes President is launch a federal investigation into Planned Parenthood.

Immigration

Despite the fact that Ted Cruz is the son of a Cuban immigrant, he frequently talks about the need to secure the border and end sanctuary cities.  Cruz has never and still does not support a path to citizenship for the country’s 11 million undocumented immigrants even though his opponents have said that he once supporting “amnesty”.  He also thinks the United States should not accept Syrian refugees.

Terrorism

Ted Cruz wants to “carpet bomb them [ISIS] into oblivion” and wants to find out if sand glows in the dark by calling for “carpet bombing” and “saturation bombing” regions of Iraq and Syria controlled by ISIS.  Never mind the fast that this would be a war crime under the Geneva Convention.  Ted Cruz called for conducting airstrikes with less concern for civilian casualties after the terrorist attack in Paris last November.

Obamacare

Ted Cruz tried to defund The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) with a 21-hour “filibuster” in 2013  He loves to say that he will repeal “every last word of Obamacare” but he has no plan for replacing it and doesn’t like to talk about what he would do when millions of Americans lose their coverage. Ted Cruz repeats the debunked claim that Obamacare has raised premiums and caused millions to lose their part-time jobs. If Cruz were to be elected president, millions of Americans would lose their health insurance and he doesn’t have a plan to stop it.

Climate Change

Ted Cruz is the most extreme Climate Change denier of all the Republican candidates. He cite discredited satellite data and says that the 97 percent of climate scientists who agree that the planet is warming are wrong.  Ted Cruz introduced legislation that would expand oil and gas drilling, approve the Keystone XL pipeline, prevent the federal government from regulating fracking, and curtail EPA regulations.

Gun Control

Cruz has an A+ rating from the National Rifle Association and speaks about how we can only “stop bad guys by using our guns.” He spreads the conspiracy theory that the government is trying to take away people’s guns.  In Congress, he has helped to lead the defense of gun rights and helped to vote down gun legislation.

LGBT Rights

One of Ted Cruz’s campaign promises is ignoring or overturning the Supreme Court’s ruling legalizing same-sex marriage nationwide.  He has opposed laws that would protect LGBT employees from workplace discrimination and has spoken out strongly against granting equal rights to transgender people.  Ted Cruz has been endorsed by several anti-LGBT religious organizations.

These are just a few of the many reasons why Ted Cruz must not become President of the United States of America and why we must get out there and vote this election year. As many of you know, I am a major supporter of Bernie Sanders and I am doing all I can to make sure he receives the nomination.  However, if Hillary Clinton should receive the nomination, I will vote for her over whoever they pick as the Republican nomination.  This election is far too important to allow another Republican into the White House and we absolutely must get our Congress back.
